AUSTIN — Tamin Lipsey took control of the game in the second half as No. 14 Iowa State held off Dylan Disu and Texas, 70-65, at the Moody Center Tuesday night for its first win in Austin since 2015 and just the third in program history.
The Cyclones led from start to finish but Texas was able to trim a 17-point halftime deficit to just three points after Disu hit a pair of free throws with just under 3:00 left following a 9-0 Longhorn run.
But it was Lipsey that made plays down the stretch, including a clutch 3-pointer and an assist to Tre King for a dunk with 0:15 left that gave ISU a five-point lead at 68-63 and all but sealed the deal.
Lipsey finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Disu scored a game-high 28 points, including 22 in the second half while UT outscored the Cyclones, 46-34.
Iowa State salvaged a split on the current road trip to improve to 17-5 overall and 6-3 in Big 12 action. Texas drops to 15-8 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
How It Happened
Iowa State held Texas to just 30 percent shooting from the field in the first half and led 36-19 at the break.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 9-2 lead just three minutes in and controlled it the rest of the way, forcing nine Longhorn turnovers and closing the first stanza on an 8-2 run to open up the 17-point lead. Milan Momcilovic led a balanced attack with eight first-half points. All nine Cyclones that played in the opening half scored.
Texas slowly chipped away in the second half, shooting 51.9 percent from the field while Disu drilled three 3-pointers down the stretch. Disu almost singlehandedly pulled the Longhorns even but Lipsey had 10 points in the second half and ISU overcame 31.4 percent shooting in the stanza to earn the important league win.
Top Performers
While Lipsey led the way down the stretch, Momcilovic led all Cyclones with 13 points. Curtis Jones chipped in 11 points off the bench.
In addition to Disu’s 28 point-10 rebound double-double, Max Abmas added 13 points and Dillon Mitchell had 10 points.
