The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced yesterday that high school students can now earn monetary compensation from the use of their name, image, and likeness, or NIL.

According to the announcement, a student-athlete’s ability to earn compensation for NIL depends on three factors: first, that the compensation is not contingent on specific athletic performance or achievement, such as financial incentives for points scored; second, that the compensation is not provided as an inducement to attend a particular school or to remain enrolled at a particular school, a practice known as “undue influence;” and third, that the compensation is not provided by the school or an agent of the school, such as from a booster club or foundation.
