For the first time since 2006, North Mahaska’s boys are going to the Class 1A State Basketball Tournament. The Warhawks defeated Lynnville-Sully 46-31 Saturday (2/26) in Oskaloosa to win the Substate 6 crown and a place at State. North Mahaska trailed by three at halftime, but outscored Lynnville-Sully 26-8 in the second half for the win. Warhawks junior guard Lane Harmon talks about the second half rally.
“We knew we had to come out of the locker room and rebound. Once we got the rebound, we could push. And once we can push, we’re just so much more comfortable. We just knew we could score if we could push the ball. Rebound and then push.”
Ethan Huffman scored 14 points to lead North Mahaska. Conner Maston had seven points for Lynnville-Sully. North Mahaska takes a 20-5 record into next week’s 1A Boys State tournament. They will take on North Linn Monday, March 7 at 2pm at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. You can follow the Warhawk boys at State on KBOE-FM.
In Class 2A boys’ basketball Saturday, Pella Christian earned a spot at State with a 54-32 victory over Des Moines Christian in the 2A Substate 7 title game. The Eagles will play Roland-Story next Monday night at 7:15 at Wells Fargo Arena.
Two area teams can advance to the State 3A Boys Basketball Tournament Monday (2/28). Defending 3A Champions Pella play Winterset at Indianola for the Substate 7 title, while Newton meets Dallas Center-Grimes at Ankeny Centennial for the 3A Substate 6 title.
