Eddie Burgess rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 187 yards and two more touchdowns as Montezuma held on to beat New London 36-34 Friday (10/22) in the opening round of the 8-man high school football playoffs. The biggest play of the game came with 5:32 to play in the fourth quarter, as New London scored a touchdown and went for a two point conversion to tie the game. The pass fell incomplete and the Braves won to improve to 10-0 on the season. Montezuma will host Audubon in the second round of the playoffs this coming Friday night (10/29). In Class 1A football last Friday, Sigourney-Keota advanced to the second round with a 34-8 victory over Durant in Sigourney. The Cobras’ Cade Molyneux ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns. 9-0 Sigourney-Keota hosts Columbus Catholic this coming Friday in the second round of the playoffs. That game will be on KMZN AM & FM.
Other first round playoff scores from Friday: In Class A, Lynnville-Sully eliminated Highland 40-15. The Hawks will host North Tama this coming Friday. In Class 1A, Pella Christian advanced with a 42-21 win over Mediapolis. The Eagles will play at Dike-New Hartford. And in Class 2A, PCM got by Clarinda 14-13. PCM will play at Williamsburg Friday.
Other high school football on Friday……Oskaloosa ended its season with a 38-14 loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier. Senior Colin Snitker rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown for the Indians, who end the year with a 4-5 record. Pella and Newton missed out on 4A playoff berths as Cedar Rapids Washington beat the Dutch 23-21 and Clear Creek-Amana edged Newton 49-48. In Class 3A, Grinnell clinched a playoff spot with a 42-14 win over Fairfield. Grinnell opens the 3A playoffs Friday at West Delaware.
