After weeks of delays because of coronavirus issues, the William Penn women’s wrestling team held its first ever meet Wednesday night (12/9), hosting Indian Hills-Centerville at Penn Activities Center. 116 pound freshman Angelita Altamirano was the first Statesman woman to win a wrestling match, scoring an 11-7 decision. Here’s her reaction:
“(ha) Yeah, that is crazy. It hasn’t hit me yet. (laughs)”
Teah Chunn at 123 pounds followed with another decision win….and the Statesmen also got pinfall victories from Mani Selemani at 130 and Joylynn Wegman at 143. While Indians Hills won the meet 18-17, Altamirano saw plenty of good things.
“I think we did really good. I think this is a great learning experience for us. We were training for this tournament to teach us. We weren’t training ‘This is it. This is it.’ No, this is for us to see where we are, to see how good we are, to see what we need to work on.”
The Statesmen women won’t be back in competition until January 21, when they wrestle at Grand View.
