It started as a routine traffic stop, but turned into a chase and led to two Ottumwa men being arrested. Around 11:30 Wednesday morning (4/8), a Wapello County Sheriff’s Deputy tried to stop a car for a traffic violation at the intersection of Cliffland Road and River Road southeast of Ottumwa. But the driver sped off and lost control of the vehicle twice before going into a ditch just west of 91st Avenue. The driver, 20-year-old Dilson Jerezano Banegas of Ottumwa has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, eluding, possessing less than 50 kilos of marijuana with intent to deliver, a drug tax stamp violation, interference with official acts and OWI. And 23-year-old Drake Steinbach of Ottumwa is charged with a felon possessing a firearm and violating his probation. Banegas is being held in the Wapello County Jail on $2000 bond; Steinbach is also in the Wapello County Jail on $10,000 cash only bond.
