Montezuma’s boys have been highly-regarded all season long. The Braves are fifth in this week’s Associated Press Class 1A rankings. I asked Montezuma Coach Derrick Dengler how this year’s team differs from last year’s team that made it to the State Tournament.
“We’re a little bit younger. We start a freshman this year, we start a sophomore as well and bring a freshman off the bench. We don’t have quite as much size as we did last year, a little bit lankier last year, able to contest shots a little bit easier that way. This year, we’ve probably got a little bit more balanced shooting on the outside. I won’t say scoring because Trey (Shearer) and Cole (Watts) do a lot of our scoring, but we’re able to swing it around and shoot the ball a little bit more on the outside, I think.”
Montezuma’s boys and girls basketball teams will play at PCM Thursday night (1/30).
