They are the co-champions. William Penn’s women’s basketball team clinched a share of the Heart of America Conference championship Wednesday night (1/20) with an 83-41 victory at Mount Mercy. It’s the first title for the Statesmen women since 1988. Kate Ylitalo had 23 points to lead the Statesmen to their ninth consecutive win. The Statesmen women are now 26-2 on the year and 21-2 in the conference. They can win the conference title outright with a win Saturday afternoon (1/23) against Benedictine at Penn Gymnasium.
On the men’s side, the Statesmen lost at Mount Mercy 92-84, snapping their three game winning streak. Darius Wheeler and Marlon Alcindor had 20 points apiece for William Penn. The 16th ranked Statesmen are now 20-7 overall and 14-7 in the conference. William Penn’s men will host 2nd ranked Benedictine Saturday afternoon.
