Report: Mike D’Antoni Hired As Assistant Coach by Philadelphia 76ers

After reports indicated a deal was close a week ago, the Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to terms to make Mike D’Antoni the associate head coach, Philly.com reports.

The move inserts a veteran coach known for helping offenses in the lead assistant position. The Sixers have struggled with offense during Brett Brown’s tenure as coach, though defense has also lapsed this season. The move also comes in the wake of the team hiring Jerry Colangelo as a senior executive alongside Sam Hinkie. There is widespread speculation that Hinkie may be getting pushed out of key decision-making roles.

D’Antoni’s hire is particularly notable for their backcourt miasma. Every point guard available, from Isaiah Canaan to Tony Wroten to Kendall Marshall, needs development and guidance on running an offense, and D’Antoni is well-known for accelerating the growth of guards.
